I've shot at few different locations throughout Houston both professionally and for fun. Whether you want to take portraits, photograph landscape and scenery, or have the desire to hire someone to take your pictures for you, here are a few ideas!
A Park Near You
This is a pretty obvious suggestion as everyone knows that parks and nature make nice pictures! It doesn't need to be a huge one like Herman Park and there is probably one much closer to you (with less traffic). I live near Bear Creak park and it is perfectly acceptable for a shoot with lots of trees, playgrounds, and sports fields. The top two pictures above were taken there. Katy has several nice parks as well. Mary Jo Peckham Park and Cullen Park are lovely. Parks can pretty much be used for any type of session, even just for nature shots and they are many to choose from in the Houston area. You can also bring your pets!
Katy Heritage Park
Historical homes with vintage wooden porches, swings, and rocking chairs. Pretty landscaping and picket fences, a gazebo, and more. This place is full of old town charm! They welcome professional photographers and amateurs alike to use their grounds and appreciate their work.
Williams Tower and Waterwall in Midtown
This place is neat for portraits or just for photographing our city's unique attractions! There is an open field for picnics and playing for the kids. There are a number of benches and a small little areas with trees. The best part (of course) is the soaring skyscraper and the waterwall ampitheater with is impressive arches. Bring a wide angle lens and beware of the mist!
290 West during the Spring for Bluebonnets
In the springtime, you can take Hwy 290 out towards Brenham to take photos in the bluebonnets, which is of course, something every Texan should do at least once in their lifetime! We went in April and the bluebonnets were in full bloom and BEAUTIFUL! Just drive until you see a nice patch and park on the side of the road.
Yes, this one is a little far, but who doesn't love being on the water! Take photos from the boardwalk or take a boat ride out for some picutes on the water. Just make a day out of it and have some yummy food and ride a few rides!
For the lively traveler or pilot or just someone who loves planes, airports can offer some great photo ops. The smaller ones, such as Weiser off 290 work well as they are easily maneuverable and you can get right up on the planes for awesome shots. It's even more fun if you take a discovery flight and capture some aerial shots of our city! That will cost you a little bit, but the view is worth it!
Around Your Own Home!
Don't underestimate the value of photos taken in your own home or backyard. If you are just having fun with your equipment, shooting things like flowers, bugs, pets/kids, and clouds can be a whole lot of fun, plus, you won't have to go anywhere!
Other places to consider depending on your needs: the zoo, schools, churches, drive to Galveston for beach photos, abandoned train tracks, barns/farms/pastures, etc.
